Description
Jacques Claassen, Wierdabrug. Centurion: family rescued from 4 armed black male robbers by girlfriend dialing mom with her TEETH
March 20 2012. The Claassen family survived an armed house robbery by four aggressive black males - one carried an AK47 -- due to the unusual ability of Jacques Claassens' girlfriend to use her teeth to dial a number.
The unusual incident was recorded by the LookLocal.co.za journalist Suzette van Huyssteen op March 20 2012. The Wierdabrug police confirmed that three of the four armed men had been arrested.
Jacques Claassen decided to tell the story 'just to say thank you', he told Ms Van Huyssteen.
"I went to bed at about 01:00 after watching cricket. I was almost asleep when four (black) men walked into the bedroom, three armed.
Two had pistols and one had what looked like an AK47,” Claasen said. The men asked how many people were in the house.
“I did not want my mother to stumble upon them so I told them to fetch her, as it was my girlfriend, mother and I in the house,” Claasen said.
The armed men left the room and Claassen jumped on the only unarmed man - however the three others returned and one pistol-whipped Claassen over the head.
“I remember praying that they keep me alive and that I do not pass out, as I was preparing myself to talk my mother and girlfriend through a rape or even murder,” Claassen said.
One of the attackers was 'extremely violent", smacking his mother in the face twice and kicking him in the face while he was lying on the floor with his feet and hands tied behind his back.
"One maneven bit into my girlfriends finger in an attempt to remove her ring, something that made me realise the hopelessness of the situation as I told him he should have just asked as she would have given it to him,” Claassen said.
However - thanks to his tied-up girlfriend's unusual ability to use her teeth to dial, she phoned her mother while the four attackers were carrying valuables outside.
Her mother phoned the police and "within minutes we had probably about 30 armed police officers and members of the community policing forum, a medic, priest and counsellor on the scene.
" It's responses like these that gives us hope,” Claasen said.
He told Van Huyssteen that there was 'no hesitation on the police’s behalf and the professional manner in which the whole scene was handled deserves recognition.
“I thank you for saving my family and coming to our aid in our time of need. I salute you as a member of the public,” Claasen said.
Captain Agnus Huma at the Wierdabrug police station (Phone: 012-6544031 Fax: 012-6548857) confirmed that three of the four black male suspects were arrested with the assistance of the K9 unit.
The police found one of the firearms - discarded in the yard and the three suspects had jewellery, cell phones and breaking in equipment on them when arrested.
The arrested men's ages ranged from 26 to 30 years. A case of house robbery was opened.
