25 Nov 2011 Nine butcheries in Schoemansdal raided, illegal meat stolen from farms confiscated
Schoemannsdal is surrounded by villages of which the main source of income for the community is farming.
Police and other law enforcement agencies have identify the rampage in stock theft around the area.
Recently police from Schoemansdal in conjunction with other departments such as Mpumalanga Department of Veteran Health, Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison embark on a four days fruitful stock theft operation.
It is a norm around the area that butchery owners and community slaughter cows on their own without any consultation with the Veteran Health Department, it is alleged that this unlawful behaviour have contributed negatively in the rising of the reported cases of stock theft.
According to the investigation the most vulnerable community to the meat that might be contaminated is the elders at the government grant pay points where it is normally sold.
During this operation nine butcheries were raided in areas like Bethalspruit, Jeepes Reef, Middelplass, Driekopies, Magogeni and Borchfontein.
There were no arrest during this exercise, but fines were issued to people conducting businesses unlawfully and all the meat that was confisticated from the butcheries was later exposed.
