Saturday 25-Jun-2011 Rhodesian-born blog-journalist of African Crisis, and IT-specialist Jan Lamprecht writes:
Last night I had an interesting incident. I was driving along Louis Botha ave in Johannesburg. It is a pretty busy road and there were cars and black taxis all over.
When I got to a set of traffic lights (which were working - of late in Randburg/Cresta we've had lots of traffic lights not working properly) - I noticed 3 black men. I know from past experience that its a good thing to take notice of blacks who want to rob you because it can unnerve them. So I was watching the one guy then the other, then the other. It is a 2 lane road, and then one black guy would be on the left side of my car and two would be on the right. But they were walking behind my car and then here and then there. I was watching them all the time, and I did feel somewhat uneasy, but did not feel overtly threatened.
Then suddenly, one of them, a middle-aged guy suddenly crossed the road and came to my car door. He grabbed at the door handle to open it, but my door was locked, as is my habit, and he banged on my window. As he moved towards me, he held his arm in such a way that it looked as if he had a pistol he was holding close to his leg. In the bad lighting, I was totally convinced he had a firearm.
He then tried to open my door and then banged hard on the window and door and said to me: "Open the door or I will shoot you".
The traffic light was still red and there was not much I could do, so I drove my car forward about 3m - as far as I could, without driving into other traffic. I was fully expecting him to shoot me. If you are in a car, and you try to accelerate away from someone with a firearm you really stand no chance, because relative to him, he can still fire at you several times while you only move a short distance. People have been killed like that in their driveways while trying to get away from armed criminals.
My move forward with the car, caused him to walk away. He could have pursued me, but did not. Then very shortly after that the light turned green and I drove off.
I began to wonder afterwards whether the guy did indeed have a firearm. It was dark, and he could have been bluffing. Several years ago, some of you will recall I caught a black guy in my back yard and he had a 9mm pistol on him. I saw it clearly in the light. I was unarmed at the time and shouted at him and he lost his nerve.
Yesterday, if the guy was truly armed, then the distance between us was no more than 20cm - him on the other side of my car window. I have also had a black criminal break my passenger door window and steal my cell phone. That caught me off guard.
This time I was much more alert. But I had never experienced an actual attempted hijacking before. But I have learned to be more alert of blacks loitering about at traffic lights.
So after the event I began to question as to whether he really had a gun or whether he was just trying to bluff me and scare me into jumping out of my car out of fear of being shot. And there have been news stories of blacks who have been caught doing hold-ups with toy pistols. So looking back, this guy could have been someone like that, taking a chance and seeing if with fear he could bluff me out of my car.
At the time, the way he held his hand and the way the lighting was, I was totally convinced that he did indeed have a gun. Even so, I made no attempt to surrender. I was fully expecting him to shoot me through the window as I tried to drive away. But I did it anyway.
I now know how I will react if someone tries to shoot me at point blank range. He's just going to have to pull the damned trigger, because I'm NOT surrendering.
